Beato was a photojournalist during the Opium War in China (1860) and the Sudanese colonial wars (1885). Basing himself in Japan, he devoted his career largely to photographing Asia and the Near East. This study of a Burmese woman from the late 19th century is renowned for its intricate textures—the silk of the htamein, the delicate floral adornments, and the serene, dignified composure.
